BIGCON 2011 – 1850 Warhammer 40k Tournament – Sept 24/25

So coming up here in a couple of weeks is 2011’s BIGCON tourney in Kamloops, BC (http://www.bigcon.ca/).  It’s a 2 day event with 40k, warmachine, magic, boardgames, etc.  I’ll be participating in the 1850 Warhammer 40k Event with my space wolves and as last years winner I’ve got a reputation to protect!  This is what I’m thinking this year.  My comments in RED!

Rune Priest – Storm Caller, Murderous Hurricane 100 [My standard choice, cheap and effective.  I’m giving storm caller a run as I plan on firing off my razors all game an it gives me something to do the turn my rhinos go over 6″]

5 Wolf Guard – 4 Combi Meltas, 4 Power Fists 190 [5 guys, 4 with special gear.  The one without the gear joins the camping TL-Lascannon razor while the others join the remaining vehicles]

Dreadnought – 2x TL Autocannons 125 [Probably not the strongest choice in a Space Wolves army – They’re more points than say the BA book and Space Wolves have fangs.  It’s no slouch though and I really like my model!]

8 Grey Hunters – Meltagun, Wolf Standard, Mark of the Wulfen, Rhino 185 [My bog standard Rhino unit.  I’m giving MotW another chance in these units as I want to be able to toss these guys into combat a fair amount.  My main midfield presence.  Rune Priest Here]

9 Grey Hunters – Meltagun, Wolf Standard, Mark of the Wulfen, Rhino 200 [My bog standard Rhino unit.  I’m giving MotW another chance in these units as I want to be able to toss these guys into combat a fair amount.  My main midfield presence.]

5 Grey Hunters – Meltagun, Razorback (Las Plas) 155 [Midfield objective holders but in a pinch and dual assault with something.  It’s still 6 grey hunters with a fist…]

5 Grey Hunters – Meltagun, Razorback (TL Lascannon) 155 [Home objective holder but can prolly fend off minor outflankers.  It’s still 6 grey hunters putting out 19 attacks]

Long Fangs – 4 missiles 115 [Obvious choice for any SW player; I’ve dropped a missile from my original 2 units and added a 3rd.  More missiles, more targets at a minor price increase!]

Long Fangs – 4 missiles 115

Thunderwolf – Thunderhammer 80 [I’ve always wanted to run TWC but I find if you run a large unit you need a character for the LD boost (8 is pretty unreliable).  These guys are essentially fearless and pack 5 str 10 hits.  They can help shore up combats, threaten mid-field, attack land raiders, etc etc.  Lets see how they do!]

Thunderwolf – Thunderhammer 80

Thunderwolf – Thunderhammer 80

1850/1850 [What a weird point limit]

There ya go!  It seems like a really solid list with plenty of shooting and bodies.  I think my main weakness is still hordier marines (JEFF) but ultimately I think its a solid all-around list!

Thoughts?

Not sure what the point difference / etc is, but have you given thought to a Frost Blade (or whatever the S+ weapon the wolves have) on at least one of the TWC – make him more of an infantry killer? Might be handy to have at least one of them that can out-pace an enemy fist / power claw / whatnot. Initiative on TWC is 4, I imagine?
Definitely not anything wrong with a Hammer though, of course. Was just curious as to your thoughts.

Yeah I4 on the TWC. The Frost Blade is 5 pts cheaper making him str 6 with 6 attacks on the charge. While that does seem pretty badass there’s a few reasons I went with the TH. The first is allocation. 5 str 10 hammer attakcs, once other damage has been done, is more likely to get allocated to something important especially with the 3 attacks from the fist. Also, if he swings the same speed as the rest of the unit there’s a chance of some of those power weapon attacks getting lumped…

The other big one is that he’s already rending. I can choose to not attack with the hammer (and thus use his other CCW) and spit out 5 rending attacks at str 5 which is already pretty good. Paying 25 pts for +1 str and a better chance to ignore armour doesn’t seem that great, IMO!
