Deathstar
With the recent popularity of Draigo-wing (even with his RIDICULOUS fluff) I’ve thought of what maybe some of the other popular books can put out in terms of ‘deathstar’ armies; More specifically my beloved Space Wolves.
During my period as an Ork player, I was pretty well known for being the ‘Nob Guy.’ Nob bikers, Meganobz and Ghaz all in the same list — at 1500 points! And it worked! I took home first at a couple of tournies located around BC.
With my current space wolves list I opted for more of a Saturation theme. My 1500 point list has 53 marines in it plus 3 rhinos, 1 razorback and 1 dreadnought. It’s almost too much for many armies to deal with — especially with the current meta being quantity of fire instead of quality. When you get a 3+ save against most of it, or at least a 4+, guys tend to stick around.
However, as I look to end August with 2 more tournies under my belt I’m thinking of different ways to play my wolves. I’ve always been a close combat guy and have always thought that the Thunderwolf Cavalry have been a cool unit in addition to being fairly good. I’ve actually built a unit of them 3 separate times (once riding cold ones, once riding juggernauts and finally currently riding the KoC horses) with probably a 4th incoming.
With the latest sneak peak at the new Ogre models coming out, I’ve taken a real shine to the wolf riders.Obviously it depends on the scale of these guys. If those are monstrous creature bases then I might be SoL.
Here’s the list:
Wolf Lord – Frost Blade, Storm Shield, Thunderwolf Mount, 2x Fenrisian Wolves, Wolftail talisman
Wolf Lord – Frost Blade, Storm Shield, Thunderwolf Mount, 2x Fenrisian Wolves, Wolftail talisman, meltabomb
-Basically 2 of the most badass characters in the 40k universe. str 6, natural T 5, 6 attacks each with a potential 24″ threat range. The 2 wolves are basically 2 cheap wounds for the squad against ap3 or lower stuff. The talisman is just a third level precaution against any of the nastier psychic abilities and GK force weapons (At least this is the common belief on many of the forums).
Rune Priest – Storm Caller, Living Lightning
-Mainly just purchased for his staff. Throws up the 5+ cover save to help the razorbacks.
5 Thunderwolf Cavalry – 1 Thunder Hammer, 1 Storm Shield, 1 Storm Shield & Meltabomb, 1 meltabomb, and 1 vanilla.
5 Thunderwolf Cavalry – 1 Thunder Hammer, 1 Storm Shield, 1 Storm Shield & Meltabomb, 1 meltabomb, and 1 vanilla.
-The meat and potatoes of the army. Coupled with the Lords, there’s not too much that can stand up to them.
5x Grey Hunters – Meltagun, Razorback (Las/Plas)
5x Grey Hunters – Meltagun, Razorback (Las/Plas)
5x Grey Hunters – Meltagun, Razorback (Las/Plas)
-We need troops.
6 Long Fangs – 5 Missile Launchers
6 Long Fangs – 5 Missile Launchers
-Need to bust open those transports before I can assault the gooey insides. Also to help soften up the nastier stuff.
2000 points.
Normally I try to design for 1500, and while I can for this army – like many of the other ‘deathstar’ armies it really comes into its own at 2000.
I really like the idea for your conversions there Ryan. What size of base should the thunderwolf be mounted on? Are you looking at the Med or Large? GW recent tomb king serpent rider creatures are on a chariot size base I beleive, and by the look of them I think they are the same size. Honestly seeing 12 HUGE wolf beast with Terminators on their backs would be amazing!! There is some wicked conversion possabilitys here, you got my gears turning… lol and I will take any excuse to play with new mini kits! I have been rolling around the idea of a Nightlords DP using the new Zombie dragon, and maybe trying to play fantasy again and start up the VC. I would really like to see this come together just for the visual aspect! Nice idea dude.
Thanks dude,
There really isn’t any sort of standard for the TWC base size. Canis is mounted on a large 60mm base so I’d either use that or the long biker bases. Although these look like they may stretch the entire length of the chariot base and therefore maybe not work. While terminators on their back would be awesome it wouldn’t match the statline of the TWC and power armoured marines might look too small on them.
Yeah I still really like the look of the VC, although they are rumoured to be the next fantasy book. It might be a good time to wait and see. Also with the FAQ changes to the power scroll, fantasy got a bit better. Now if they’ll only nerf teclis and the book of Hoeth.
